7. Cate Blanchett – Thor: Ragnarok

Beauty And The Beast Belle
Marvel Studios

The Thor franchise has long been seen as the weak link in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Taika Waititi’s critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok seems to have changed that. Funny and exciting, Thor: Ragnarok’s change in tone has seen it hailed as not only the franchise’s best film but as one the of MCU’s too.

It does, however, have its own weak link in the form of Cate Blanchett’s turn as Hela, Goddess of Death. Now, any comic book movie fan worth their salt can tell you that Marvel has a bit of a problem not only crafting formidable villains but interesting female characters too and those two issues seem to have collided in Blanchett’s character.

While it’s true that Hela is underwritten which is no fault of Blanchett’s, she doesn’t really help in giving us a rote, one-note antagonist who wouldn’t look out of place in a pantomime. It’s a shame that she didn’t infuse a little more intrigue into the MCU’s first female villain, but as it goes Hela looks set to join a long line of largely forgettable Marvel antagonists.
