10 Worst Performances In Otherwise Awesome 2016 Movies

5. Idris Elba – Star Trek Beyond

After a blistering start to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot and a relatively disappointing sequel in Star Trek Into Darkness, fans weren’t holding out too much hope for the next outing in the franchise. But luckily for all involved, Star Trek Beyond turned out brilliantly harking back to the promise shown in the franchise’s first film.

It boasted intense action scenes, impressive visual effects, surprisingly emotional elements and generally great performances from its ensemble cast. Except, that is, for Idris Elba as Star Trek Beyond’s mandatory villain Krall – an alien warlord hellbent on destroying the galaxy.

Not sure what the issue was with franchises and disappointing villains last year, but Mads Mikkelsen’s Kaecilius wasn’t the only example of good actor giving a bad villainous performance. Maybe there’s something in the water that’s making scriptwriters craft shoddy bad guys, because there’s no doubt that both Mikkelsen and Elba can indeed act.

Perhaps it’s because Elba holds back somewhat with Krall, playing him as sombre and complex when really the ridiculous amount of prosthetic makeup he dons for much of the movie could’ve used a slightly more animated performance.

Whatever the cause, the end result is a pretty uninspiring villain indeed. For a far superior example of Elba’s villainous prowess last year, stick to his turn as the voice of Shere Khan in The Jungle Book.
