10 Worst Performances In Otherwise Awesome 2016 Movies

4. Laura Linney – Sully

Cast your minds back to 2009 and the extraordinary feat performed by one Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger when he successfully crash-landed a plane on New York City’s Hudson River without one single casualty.

Naturally, it was only a matter of time before this act of bravery got the Hollywood treatment and it did last year with director Clint Eastwood at the helm and Tom Hanks starring as the titular hero. And it turned out pretty damn good.

Despite some legitimate objections to the movie being a bit slippery with the truth – but when doesn’t Hollywood take liberties with the facts when bringing real-life incidents to the big screen? – critics, by and large, loved it. Hanks is on form as per usual and bolstered by great turns from co-stars Aaron Eckhart as Sully’s co-pilot and Breaking Bad’s Anna Gunn as one of the officials investigating the incident.

The weak link in the cast, however, is Laura Linney as Sully’s wife Lorraine. Admittedly, it’s not the meatiest of roles and Linney doesn’t get much to do other than spend most of the film on the phone to Hanks expressing a bunch of platitudes. That may be representative of the real-life Lorraine Sullenberger’s role immediately after the incident, but it makes Linney’s performance feel quite literally phoned in.
