2. Anthony Hopkins Was Behind It All - The Virtuoso
In total honesty, there's very little worth remembering about the painfully generic hitman thriller The Virtuoso, where the titular assassin (Anson Mount) is tasked with taking down a rogue hitman by his mentor, who just so happens to be called The Mentor (a slumming but entertaining Anthony Hopkins).
Though Hopkins spends almost his entire role either sat in a chair talking over the phone or standing still and expositing, you'll be awarded no points at all for guessing that he's actually the primary antagonist.
Indeed, the Virtuoso's last job has actually been part of a convoluted ploy by the Mentor to have his protege wiped out, feeling that he's lost his touch as a hitman following a prior botched hit.
In a slightly unexpected move, though, the film doesn't end with the Virtuoso figuring this out and killing the Mentor. Rather, the Virtuoso is killed by another assassin working for the Mentor, the Waitress (Abbie Cornish), who has gotten close to him in order to carry out the hit.
Hiring Anthony Hopkins to play your scenery-munching baddie isn't the worst idea in the world, but with such a limp, generic, cliched execution, it just feels like a massive waste.
