5. I Saw The Light

Critics were you united in their praise of Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal of Hank Williams, the BBC’s Mark Kermode going so far as to call it a “flawless central performance.” Sadly they were also agreed that it wasn’t enough to salvage this movie.

It doesn’t help that Tom Hiddleston was in his 30s playing a man in his 20s. It’s not Beyond The Sea levels of disparity, but it’s enough to effect how you receive Williams in the film.

Based on an award-winning Hank Williams biography, fans had high hopes for I Saw The Light, but the film brings nothing new to the familiar tropes of boozing, touring and sleeping around. Films like Ray and I Walk The Line cover similar ground and do it better.

The film’s studio Sony showed their complete lack of faith in the project when they pushed the release date back and out of the prime Oscar contention season.
