4. Kowalski Returns - Gravity

Another potentially controversial pick here, but here me out: Gravity tells the story of a seemingly routine space mission that goes horribly wrong when the debris from a broken satellite ends up causing major issues for scientist Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney). After Kowalski is forced to sacrifice himself to save Stone, she goes on a one woman mission to return to Earth in one piece without succumbing to the pitfalls of space. For most of the movie, it's left to Bullock to keep our attention - a job she does remarkably well, given that there's nobody else in the movie apart from Clooney. Stone's solo role makes for the perfect feeling of isolation. For some reason, though, writer/director Alfonso Cuaron opts to include a "dream sequence" where Kowalski returns to Stone to impart some useful advise, but it goes against the lone ranger, survival aspect of the movie - why couldn't Stone have figured out what to do with George Clooney coming back into the picture? The atmosphere was far more tense with Stone as the only character, and his return sort of breaks down the mood that's been frantically building to this point. It feels unnecessary, and even lessens Stone as a character.
