10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 2010s

9. Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Suicide Squad Joker
Marvel Studios

Notice how earlier I said almost everything in the MCU was great, because this second entry in the Thor series is the biggest black mark on Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Mainly because it was so damn dull!

This film saw the titular Norse God of Thunder battle the Dark Elves to bring peace to the nine realms while also protecting Jane Foster who has been infected by a red space sludge called the Aether.

The film ranks low on the list because there are some good moments, like the death of Thor’s mother, any banter between Thor and Loki, but that’s where it ends. The big bad of the film, Malekith, is the definition of stock baddie with a dull revenge motivation and, when compared to other villains of the MCU, definitely ranks among the weakest.

The biggest problems are the side characters, including Jane’s friends (Erik Selvig starts off running around naked in this film) but more-so Jane herself. Natalie Portman clearly has no investment in her performance after finding out she’d been coerced into the film on the belief that Patty Jenkins would be directing. Her disappointment is apparent for the whole world to see as she gives one of the worst performances of her career.

It’s just a visually and thematically dull film and something to fill the time until the next Avengers came out. All I can say is thank Odin for Taika Waititi.
