10 Worst Things About Being A Movie Fan In 2016

3. Cameos Are No Longer A Surprise

When was the last time you were sitting in the cinema and something happened on-screen that genuinely surprised you? Something completely and utterly unexpected. It's a total rarity these days, now that film studios have realised that surprises can be marketed.

The most recent example occurred in the days leading up to the release of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them. Warner Brothers announced that Johnny Depp had been cast as Grindelwald in the upcoming sequel. Which meant that seeing Grindelwald at the close of the first movie was less "oh my god, Johnny Depp is Grindelwald? Wow!" and much more "oh yeah, Johnny Depp is Grindelwald. Read that last night".

The same thing happened before the Ghostbusters remake. Audiences knew exactly who was cameoing and where. What happened to letting audiences experience genuine surprise?

The last time I remember this happening was during 2014's Interstellar, and I don't remember the time before that.

Commonly found reading, sitting firmly in a seat at the cinema (bottle of water and a Freddo bar, please) or listening to the Mountain Goats.
