10 Worst Things About Being A Movie Fan In 2016
2. There Are So Many Cinematic Universes
Remember when the majority of films were standalone, and unless they were a direct sequel you could watch safe in the knowledge that you'd understand the complete picture? No? Maybe I covered that in my spin-off article...
Fact is, the movie industry in 2016 is all about the cinematic universe. Sure, there's the Marvel one, and the DC one, but there are a whole lot more than that in the works. Star Wars is getting it's own spin-off universe too, beginning with Rogue One and following up with a Han Solo movie. While we don't know what's after that, it was recently revealed Josh Trank was working on a Boba Fett film, so there are clearly plenty of projects in the works.
There's also going to be a Lego cinematic universe, including Lego Batman and Lego Ninjago. Oh, and what about the Universal Horror cinematic universe? That begins with The Mummy reboot in 2017. Then there's Kong: Skull Island, which is part of the Godzilla / Kong universe.
You get my point. These days, so many blockbusters are intricately connected, with inevitable references, throw backs and scenes setting up what comes next. The only way to appreciate a lot of mainstream blockbusters completely is to watch all of the connecting films.
