10 Worst Things James Bond Has Ever Done
3. Treating Mathis Like Trash
Now, a second foray into the frolicking fun-fest that is Quantum of Solace sees James Bond treating one of his friends like an enemy - and for once they're not a woman!
Having been betrayed by the Bolivian head of police, René Mathis wakes up beaten and bloody in Bond's boot, his presence meant to frame Bond and give the police just cause to get rid of him. The police open fire as soon as Bond hauls Mathis' not-corpse out of the back of his Range Rover and, like a true hero of the British Empire, Bond uses him as a human shield.
Then follows a tender moment as Bond cradles Mathis' soon-to-be corpse in his arms. It is fair to say Bond seems authentically sorry for what he's done, i.e. getting Mathis beaten up and then shot to death. But we all saw the tape and there are no two ways about it:
Bond used the man to conveniently absorb every last bullet.
Add this to the long string of punishments Bond has put Mathis through (insisting that M keep torturing him in Casino Royale following the revelation of his innocence), the poor man is probably relieved to be shot of both his life and his alliance with the world's foremost Double O.
But death is not the final indignity for poor Mathis. To hide the evidence, Bond disposes of his body in the nearest dumpster.
Yup, in the bin you go.
