10 Worst Ways Movie Characters Have Died In Space

6. Incinerated By The Sun - Sunshine

Total Recall
Fox Searchlight Pictures

As you go about your day, it's easy to forget the sun is a nuclear fireball which discharges the same energy as 400 billion megaton nukes every second. Our neighbouring star is so dangerous, you can suffer permanent eye damage by looking at it for a few seconds despite the fact it's 93 million miles away.

Which begs the question - how dangerous would the Sun be if you were beside it? In Danny Boyle's horror flick, Sunshine, the Sun begins to cool, causing Earth to fall into a global winter. As a group of pilots and scientists head towards the star to reignite it, the navigator discovers their shields are misaligned, compelling Captain Kaneda to go for a space walk to repair it.

While doing this, the Sun disperses a solar flare, which will char Kaneda to a crisp if he's exposed to it. Realising the flare will cause incontrovertible damage to his vessel if the shields aren't realigned, Kaneda refuses to seek shelter. After he fixes the shield, the flare smashes into him, burning him to ash.

One could only imagine the agony Kaneda must have been felt after experiencing the full heat of the Sun.
