10 Would-Be Franchises That Failed At The First Hurdle

6. The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen

In 2003 screen icon Sean Connery attempted to lend some credibility to a would-be franchise that proved stillborn: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Loosely based on an Alan Moore series of comic books, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen resurrected musty characters from the annals of Victorian Literature in the hope that these once popular heroes could recapture their former glory by engaging in superhero shenanigans. The long-awaited Dorian Gray/Tom Sawyer team-up wasn't the smash hit everyone hoped it would be. Even though it fared decently at the box office, the film was critically lambasted and audiences weren't clamouring for a follow-up, which makes the overly-optimistic, sequel-promising final scene sadder and more ironic as the years go by.
