10 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Movies

1. Meet the Feebles (1989)

Thought Academy Award winning director Peter Jackson only made family-friendly flicks about goblins, big monkeys and French boy reporters, did you? Well, think again.

Before he broke into the mainstream, the Lord of the Rings director was a major force on the indie scene, wanging out six movies between the late '80s and '90s that pinwheel from vaguely dangerous, to darkly funny, to all-out ridiculous. And Meet the Feebles is all three at once. An animal puppet showbiz satire that plays like a live-action tabloid, the film takes a peek backstage at what the creatures of the Muppets-esque Feeble Variety Hour get up to.

Spoiler: it ain't pretty.

Every puppet has its vice, and pretty much anything you can imagine is going on in the shadows, whether it's sexually incontinent Harry the Rabbit trying to hide his myxomatosis from the media, Trevor the Rat assaulting younger cast members, Vietnam vet and knife thrower Wynyard the Frog getting strung out on heroin or Dennis the Aardvark going on what Trevor describes as a "smelly minge binge". Nothing is left to the imagination, not least because most people aren't capable of imagining that somebody would take such time, care and effort to commit such unrelenting depravity to celluloid.

But, despite being contemptibly foul, Meet the Feebles is kind of brilliant - in a totally absurd and off-the-wall way. Just don't expect to be able to process anything you see until it wakes you screaming in the night.
