10 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Movies

For those not in the know, Quentin Dupieux's name is all but synonymous with absurdity and surrealism in wherever the French, back alley equivalent of Hollywood is. The director and electronic musician (known as Mr Oizo) has made a career out of never filming anything audiences might anticipate, crafting new filmic structures out of whatever happens to cross his mind in the moment. At least that's how it often seems.

One of his most recent features, Smoking Causes Coughing, is testament to this idea, conforming to none of the established rules of tone, character, plot development or context.

We enter Dupieux's reality-adjacent world in the company of the Tobacco Force, a Power Rangers-like team of five who are sent by their boss - drooling rat puppet Chief Didier (Alain Chabat) - to a week-long retreat in a pod in the middle of nowhere.

While the five have limited superpowers, including the ability to give their enemies rapid-acting cancer, they struggle to find themselves within the bounds of a more normal team-building situation and fall apart under the weight of their own personalities. Throw in a suicidal robot, a genocidal Emperor of Evil and a few campfire story vignettes and you've got a hilarious combination of low-brow humour and children's TV satire that frankly doesn't give a damn what you think.
