Nothing that pop duo Sparks (brothers Ron and Russell Mael) have done in their era-spanning career has ever really made sense, but even their most astute supporters didn't see Annette coming. A romantic drama rock opera written by the brothers and directed by French auteur Leos Carax, the film makes about as much sense on paper as it does on the screen.

Stand-up comedian Henry McHenry (Adam Driver) and his opera singer wife Ann Defrasnoux (Marion Cotillard) have their first child together and find their lives changing in unexpected ways - often for the worse. So far, so Marriage Story. There's one crucial difference though: their "child", Annette, is a wooden puppet.

Annette is also a musical prodigy, and while her journey towards a Hyperbowl halftime performance that could put the shattering family back on track, might have made sense in another film, her very puppet-ness leaves even the more ordinary scenes perplexing. Add to this the film's dedication to theatrical formalism, more often than not detached from anything we might recognise as reality, and there's a whole world of WTF waiting to pop.

And don't even get us started on the subtext.
