10 'WTF Did I Just Pay To See' Movies
7. Sorry to Bother You (2018)
In four decades, rapper and radical social activist Boots Riley has only made one film - Sorry to Bother You - which he himself described as 'an absurdist dark comedy with aspects of magical realism and science fiction'. So it should go without saying that it's not a passive piece of fiction.
Drawn from Riley's own experiences in telemarketing, and informed by the struggle of being a black voice in a white society, the film brings us into the orbit of Cassius "Cash" Green (LaKeith Stanfield), a young black man living in his uncle's garage and trying to make ends meet. What starts out as a straightforward social satire, in which Cash has to use his "white voice" on the phone to get customers to react reasonably and pleasantly, swiftly descends into a perplexing anti-reality, where he's selling arms over the phone, fighting with compliments and appearing on I Got the Sh*t Kicked Out of Me, before the film drives off a narrative cliff-edge into some pretty horrific science fiction.
See, the company he works for is covertly transforming their workers into horse-hybrid "Equisapiens" to make them stronger, more obedient and more profitable, while planting Equisapiens as false revolutionaries to quell employee backlash.
Does it totally work? No, probably not. But it's worth the price of admission to marvel at the madness.
