Danny Boyle's cult classic zombie film 28 Days Later is filled with hauntingly grim imagery, though perhaps nothing quite worse than survivor Jim (Cillian Murphy) stumbling across a dead mother still cradling her equally deceased baby.
It's a moment that's seared into the brain of anyone who's seen Boyle's uniquely visceral horror film, and like many of the most unsettling images in the movie, is inspired by pictures of real-life geopolitical conflicts.
While other scenes in the movie are inspired by genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Bosnia, the mother-child pairing was adapted from a photograph Boyle saw of a gassed Kurdish woman similarly cradling her own dead baby.
