10 WTF Moments That Made You Give Up On A Movie

9.  I Am Legend - The Hollywood Ending

The Irishman
Warner

I am legend is a thrilling adaptation of the 1954 Richard Matheson classic novel, filled with an excellent buildup of tension, paying off in several intense encounters with the Darkseekers. It even pulls firmly at our heartstrings as Will Smith’s Dr Robert Neville is forced to kill his dog Samantha to prevent her from turning.

It's mostly an enjoyable movie that works as a satisfying rendition of the novel, right up until the last five minutes. Test audiences didn’t understand the original ending, where Neville realises that the Darkseekers are actually intelligent and compassionate, and that they are only attacking him to save their captured companion. So they changed it.

In the novel the realisation that he is the monster of the story is one of literature's greatest plot twists, and one we were sorely robbed off in theatres. We are instead left with a typical Hollywood ending as the noble hero sacrifices himself, and the mother and child leave to find safe haven and a cure.

Typical, predictable, and completely out of sync with the rest of the movie, and leaves you wondering why they spent so much time hinting at the Darkseekers intelligence if it never pays off. The original ending can be seen in special features and is without a doubt the superior ending.
