10 X-Men Mistakes The MCU Must Avoid
The X-Men will be rebooted for the MCU, but Marvel Studios must avoid these mistakes...
Marvel Entertainment sold the rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four to 20th Century Fox after facing bankruptcy in the 1990s, but when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, there was an unexpected bonus for comic book fans. The heroes and villains who make up those iconic franchises are now under the control of Marvel Studios, and that means they're heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After years of disappointing and often downright terrible Marvel movies from the studio, the future of the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters is finally looking up. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is getting ready to reboot them for the silver screen, and while details are scarce, it's impossible not to be excited about what comes next.
Dark Phoenix was a disaster and The New Mutants is no closer to being released than it was two years ago, so Feige has an uphill battle in front of him. With that in mind, we're taking a look at the mistakes Marvel Studios must avoid - many of which Fox made - if they hope to finally do the X-Men justice.
While we've seen the Disney-owned studio deliver hit after hit, they've not always got it right (just look at the Thor franchise before Taika Waititi took charge). Seeing as Feige got his start working on those early X-Men movies, it's hard to say what he might have planned, but it's vital he make some very different choices if the uncanny cast of characters are to find true success this time around...
10. Don't Make It All About Wolverine
The last time Wolverine was seen on screen was in 2017 when Hugh Jackman bid farewell to the role, and with an X-Men reboot looking unlikely until at least three or four more years from now, that's more than enough time for moviegoers to have moved on from the previous version of the clawed mutant.
It's inevitable that we'll get a new take on Wolverine, especially as he's a character with the potential to star in both the X-Men franchise and lead one of his own. However, what we don't need is for everything in this corner of the MCU to revolve around him as it did in Fox's movies. Everyone around him faded into the background and became little more than supporting players as a result.
Iron Man received the lion's share of the spotlight in the marketing campaigns for The Avengers movies, but Marvel Studios always managed to do the other heroes justice as well. So, even if Wolverine is at the front of every poster, overlooked characters like Iceman, Cyclops, and Storm (to name just a few of the dozens not done justice by Fox) deserve to have just as much screentime.
