10. Mia Wasikowska
Who would have thought that the young woman Tim Burton yanked from relative obscurity to head up his 2010 take on the Lewis Carroll classic would have so effectively established herself in the years since? (For that matter, who would have thought that Burtons eye-candy effort would have raked in a billion plus at the worldwide box office?). But establish herself, she has. This is not to say that everything she touches is gold, or that shes received a lot of high acclaim for her performances thus far, but she has done well in selecting roles that have showcased her talent and pleased critics. That is the recipe for future Oscar success. The best example of this was her part in The Kids Are All Right for which she was nominated with her cast mates for a SAG award. Its a testament to her skill that she held her own while sharing screen time with heavy hitters like Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo. Beyond this Best Picture nominee, she has also had noteworthy turns in films like Defiance, Amelia, Albert Nobbs, and Lawless. She has also had leads in two artistic and well-received dramas, Jayne Eyre and Restless, working with directors Cary Fukunaga and Gus Van Sant respectively in the process. And the immediate future is bright for Mia with films like Tracks, Stoker, and Only Lovers Left Alive arriving in 2013. So while she doesnt get to sit in front of the Kodak theatre this year, I wouldnt bet against her getting there soon.
