6. Life After Beth (2014)

Life After Beth
A24

Life after Beth at a glance seems similar to Warm Bodies with the roles reversed, but actually does a lot different with its concept of a zombie romance film. It also has a killer cast to sell it to viewers with Dane Dehaan, John C. Reilly and Aubery Plaza all starring.

Dane's girlfriend recently dies, but he is over the moon to discover she has resurrected and seems to be doing just fine. That soon changes, however, as Beth slowly begins to transform into a zombie over time.

The film follows the slow descent of Beth's mind as she grows further into a terrifying zombie state, and her boyfriend being powerless to do anything about it. A pretty dire concept for a comedy film, but it works due to the actors ability to ring out the laughs from a script that focuses on the awkward, funny side of becoming a brain-dead cannibal.

Plaza fully commits to the role and has some hilarious moments of physical comedy as she gets to grips with having superhuman strength and eating people. the chemistry she has with Dehaan is also on the money to carry the emotional weight of the film.

Life After Beth doesn't always work the way it should, and it can struggle to maintain a consistent tone, but it offers an entertaining unique take on the Z-formula, and the charming cast of characters elevates the concept.
