10 Zombie Movies That Put A Unique Spin On The Horror Genre

1. Shaun Of The Dead

Shaun of the Dead flawlessly blurs the line between respectful homage to zombie movies, and hilarious spoof that completely rips on the genre and its tropes.

Kicking off Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy, this foray into horror retains Wright's unmistakeable flair for directing and editing, while cranking the comedy factor up to a level never before seen in a zombie flick. It shines during its self-referential moments, such as when Shaun refuses to concede that the shambling corpses around him are zombies and refrains from using the dreaded Z word. Ed has an almost excited reaction to the dire situation as if he's finally getting to live out a video game fantasy. The film doesn't take itself too seriously at all and it's a breath of fresh air.

Despite the comedy, Shaun of the Dead manages to retain a sense of impending doom and the stakes still feel life-threateningly high. Its darker moments hit harder and losses are still emotional and carry weight to them.

It's this blend that allows the film to stand apart from the horde of zombie movies, and everyone involved plays their part in striking the perfect balance between horror and comedy, resulting in a well-crafted, unique zombie adventure.
