Endearing characters don't tend to be a selling point for films in this genre since many of them won't make it to the final credits, but Zombieland shines in its character development, and the spotlight is shone on their relationships with each other. So much so that it's difficult to not find yourself attached to the ragtag group of survivors by the end of the movie's runtime.

Zombieland doesn't waste time by retelling us a story we've heard a thousand times. The zombies' origin is omitted and that's not a bad thing. Does it really matter whether they rose from the dead, or if they're the result of a virus outbreak? Another trope that Zombieland foregoes is featuring dim-witted survivors who make ill-fated decision that will have you shouting at the screen. Instead, they follow a strict set of survival rules that give them a one-up over the zombies.

Despite not learning each other's names and instead opting to go by the cities from which they originate, the group still feel like a family by the end of the movie. They no longer feel forced together by chance, but invested and reliant on each other.

While comedy in zombie films certainly isn't exclusive to Zombieland, it leans in to it completely, with slow-mo shots, a somewhat ridiculous quest for Twinkies, and even a Bill Murray cameo showcasing a much brighter side to the apocalypse.
