Many horror films are hesitant to cross certain boundaries, and as a general rule of thumb, children tend to be safe to some degree. While they are put in some hairy situations in many films, they always seem to escape danger at the last possible second.

Cooties, on the other hand, foregoes this unwritten rule of cinema and instead features a group of kids as the main antagonists after a virus breaks out inside an elementary school. Children being the focal point of the film doesn't result in the horror elements being toned down, though, and it's still every bit as brutal and gruesome as any horror fan would expect.

This is where Cooties differentiates itself from other films in the genre. The movie doesn't dance around the delicate subject matter of killing the zombified kids, but embraces it and fully commits to the bit, even having a baby viciously attacking its mother. Comedic performances from the cast including Elijah Wood and Rainn Wilson help to alleviate some of the tension and go a long way in making audiences feel a little bit more comfortable about the tricky situation.

While it may not be a genre-defining epic, Cooties still delivers something new and wades in to new territories, unexplored by not just other zombie movies, but even cinema as a whole. Where else are you going to see Rainn Wilson mow down hordes of miniature flesh-eating monsters with a baseball launcher?
