10 Zombie Movies That Put A Unique Spin On The Horror Genre
5. I Am Legend
I Am Legend sees Will Smith as Robert Neville, the last man alive in New York City after a plague wipes out most of humanity, and turns the rest into - you guessed it - flesh-hungry, feral monsters.
Smith delivers an excellent performance, depicting Neville as a brilliant scientist trying to develop a cure, who is slowly losing grip of his sanity. He tries to cling on to some semblance of normality by conversing with store mannequins, but it's his beloved German Shepherd companion, Sam, who grounds him, helping Neville get through the days. The relationship between Neville and Sam is endearing, making the isolation feel a little less lonely. For a little while, at least.
The film's setting is a stark contrast to reality, and seeing Manhattan completely empty is an eerie sight. Backstory is doled out in the form of flashbacks which aren't entirely necessary, but they do lend a hand in showing why developing a cure is so important to Neville.
The creature design leaves a bit to be desired and the jump scares become tiresome towards the end, but I Am Legend is worth watching thanks to its bleak backdrop, and Smith's portrayal of a man struggling to hold on to what's left of his mental stability.
