100 Comics That Should Be Movies

8. The Goon

The Goon is a kick ass comic book that has been screaming for a movie adaptation for years. The similarly toned Hellboy got the green light years ago and has spawned two great flicks, the same could definitely be said for Eric Powell's supernatural comedy about a giant thug and his fast talking pal Franky, who exist in a noir world overrun with voodoo priests, zombies and other nether worldly things that go bump in the night. How Close is it to being made?: Plans for an adaptation of The Goon can be traced back to 2008 with David Fincher on board for a CGI animation with Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti in the lead roles but four years have passed and nothing has happened. In January of this year the comic's creator Eric Powell was quoted as saying:
"The Goon is in the exact same position it€™s been in for the past couple of years. Prepping the design and script while searching for funding."
The comic's almost underground following - at least compared to other titles - has probably not helped the film get made, and perhaps CGI isn't the way to go, although looking at this fantastic teaser we could be wrong. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr_Ta6NS3-g Casting Choices: In a live action movie I'd be tempted to cast Robert Knepper (T-Bag in Prison Break) as Franky and a man mountain such as an ex-wrestler, maybe Steve Austin or Nathan Jones for the character of The Goon. Heck, even Jason Statham would be good if they applied some prosthetics and made him a little uglier. If the movie ends up being animated then the aforementioned names would be great choices.
