31. Agent Smith - The Matrix Trilogy
Played By: Hugo Weaving The polite manners, stylish black suit and cool sunglasses are a mask for the most venomous piece of software you'll ever come across. Smith despises humans and is charged with squashing any hint of rebellion, bending the laws of physics in the process. Whilst the sequels harm the character with increasingly confusing mythology and pseudo-intelligent philosophy, the Agent Smith of the first movie is an eerie force of nature, underplayed to perfection by Hugo Weaving.
30. Colonel Kurtz - Apocalypse Now
Played By: Marlon Brando He may only appear in the final third of Francis Ford Coppola's war epic, but Kurtz more than leaves an impact. When we meet Kurtz, he has long since accepted the savagery of war and his part in it. Kurtz acts like an omnipotent God, monumental in stature and philosophically mystical as he stands above all others. Kurtz is a grandiose character who never steps out of the shadows, maintaining his eerie ambiguity until his death. Apocalypse Now features Marlon Brando's most psychologically complex performance as he embodies a man who knows everything about fear and horror.
29. Gollum - The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Played By: Andy Serkis The total sum of millions of Orc's, Saruman and Sauron don't add up to the power and villainy of the grimy little creature forever in search of his precious. At the very heart of the character is a tortured soul, manipulated by the power of the ring and credit to Andy Serkis for creating sympathy in a character that could so easily be one-toned. Instead, Gollum is a tragic villain who continually has internal battles as he falls deeper and deeper under the spell of the ring. The epic saga of Lord of the Rings would not have been as effective if Gollum had been botched and credit in abundance has to go to Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis for creating a truly iconic movie villain.
