The Creed movies have been incredibly good considering expectations for Rocky "sequels" dropped considerably after the fifth chapter and as much as their focus on Adonis Creed's story is a great new focus, Rocky's presence has been an important part. Both movies were as much about Rocky's post-boxing career as they are about Creed's life.

But that much will change in the third Creed movie, as Sylvester Stallone has confirmed that he is stepping away from the franchise. In an emotionally loaded Instagram post, Sly revealed his intention to retire Rocky:

“I just want to thank everyone around the whole wide World for taking the Rocky family into their hearts for over 40 years. It’s been my Ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Though it breaks my heart, Sadly all things must pass... and end. I love you Kind and generous people, and The most wonderful thing of all, is that ROCKY will never die because he lives on in you.”
Consider the torch passed.

What It Means For The Film:

Creed no longer needs Rocky, even as a coach. It would be wrong to continue having sequels where Creed simply fights the sons of Rocky's most famous opponents and as long as he sticks around that's exactly what fans are going to call for.

It's right to pass the torch (even if Rocky appears in his own film - though it would be unnecessary) and with Creed now no longer living near Rocky, it's been done.
