And finally, it's the horror flick everyone's been talking about this year, as Jay (the lovely Maika Monroe) finds herself infected with a sexually-transmitted curse. A supernatural entity will continually pursue her until it catches her, at which point it will kill her and proceed backwards to whoever gave her the curse, and so on. The only way to stop being killed? Pass it onto somebody else. It's a devilishly original premise and one that's shot through with tremendous skill by writer-director David Robert Mitchell. Aided by Disasterpeace's synth-based score, the film has a thorough 80s vibe throughout, but don't be mistaken: this is no kitschy throwback. Intertwining sex and death in a unique way (cleverly reworking the whole sex = death trope), there's palpable moral ambiguity as Jay wrestles with what to do, and Mitchell expertly cranks up the tension at key moments to effectively force her hand later on. It has its flaws, namely the slack pacing, but it's by far the most original and provocative horror film of the year, a fantastic achievement that's sure to leave many waiting to see what both Mitchell and Monroe are preparing for us next.
