2. We Are Still Here
The haunted house genre isn't exactly something new, but We Are Still Here proves how an evocative treatment can make it feel refreshed. After Paul (Andrew Sensenig) and Anne (Barbara Crampton) move into a new home to get over the death of their son, they discover a supernatural presence in the abode, and after Anne initially believes it to be their son, they realise that it's something far more sinister lying in wait. Again, not a particularly original premise, but great acting, fine period detail and some brilliantly vile gore go a long way to rectifying this. Plus, the situation is a little more complicated than it first appears, and the film presents a group of memorable antagonists who veer away from the typical ghost story nonsense. Much like other films on this list, it also finds itself stirring up unexpected emotions: the feeling of loss is palpable in the two protagonists, with the actors doing terrific jobs here. A cult classic in the making, no doubt.
