11 Awesome 2015 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

5. The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan came surging back to something approaching solid form with his latest effort, a found footage film made for $5 million of his own money, allowing him to make absolutely the film he wanted to and nothing less. It may not be the most original of premises nor is it especially scary, but instead it's just a ton of fun, like a Halloween-themed rollercoaster ride. With all the excess stripped away, the Sixth Sense filmmaker has made a simple and effective horror which boasts likeable, well-wrought characters, a wealth of unexpected humour (the son character is hysterical), and fantastic performances throughout, especially from Deanna Dunagan, who plays the increasingly-creepy grandma Doris. Above all else the film seems to see Shyamalan recognising the flaws of his previous works and reining it all in: he doesn't try too hard with the twist this time, and though he still has one up his sleeve, it's less shocking and more sensibly, efficiently effective. It's no classic, but it's just encouraging to see him making good films again. And for anyone who's seen it, you'll doubtless be able to forget the line, "You have a problem with germs, don't you?"
