4. The Nightmare
Rodney Ascher (Room 237) tackles the subject of sleep paralysis in this riveting documentary in which he interviews victims of the fascinating disorder, before re-enacting their nightmarish scenarios in terrifyingly glossy detail. Though it's a weakness of the film that Ascher doesn't really go into the scientific explanations for the condition, he's clearly more interested in the visceral experience itself, because he also suffers from it himself. The subjects themselves are a thoroughly compelling bunch, riffing on how sleep paralysis has changed their lives and most of them present their own theories about what it all means. It may lack the academic backbone to make it feel more authoritative, but whether or not you've suffered with it yourself, it's hard not to be drawn into this evocative imagery Ascher has conjured up.
