11 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Movies

6. That TV-Movie Intro - The Avengers

The Movie: Joss Whedon's superb superhero movie changed the game forever, finally bringing Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk and friends together for the ultimate team-up movie. Hilarious, superbly acted and action-packed, The Avengers remains the undeniable high-point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date.

The Scene: At a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, the Tesseract opens up a portal which transports Loki (Tom Hiddleston) into the building. Loki steals the Tesseract and turns Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Erik Selvig (Stellan SkarsgÄrd) into zombies, who help him escape. As Loki drives away, Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) give chase, but are ultimately foiled, leading into the film's opening titles.

Why It Sucks: The first 11 minutes of The Avengers pretty much feels like it came from a different writer-director: the dialogue is loaded up with hand-holding exposition to ease in the more casual audiences ("Loki! Brother of Thor!"), and it's directed like a mid-budget TV show at best, and a naff episode of Power Rangers at worst. Granted, one of the weaker aspects of the movie as a whole is its rather bland cinematography, but the pre-title sequence is so incredibly boring compared to the rest of the film, bereft of the witty scripting and well-crafted action that follows.
