11 Awful Opening Scenes In Otherwise Awesome Movies

4. The Tie Guy - Oldboy

The Movie: Chan-wook Park's infamously demented thriller is one of South Korea's best-ever thriller films, noted for its brutal violence, surreal twist on the revenge genre, and of course, its utterly jaw-dropping plot twist.

The Scene: The film opens with Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) holding a man over the edge of a building by his tie, saying that he wants to tell him his story. The man asks who he is, and just as he starts to reply, the scene cuts to a flashback, and the film properly gets started.

Why It Sucks: Because it seems so off-kilter compared to the rest of the movie: the over-the-top music and the delivery from both actors is very poor and totally at odds with most other scenes in the film. It doesn't exactly get things off to a great start. Plus, starting in the middle of the narrative was totally pointless: Park returns to the scene later only to reveal that Oh Dae-su actually saved the man from killing himself (rather than threateningly dangling him by the edge of the roof), but it doesn't have a whole lot of significance on the plot. Thankfully, this one lasts only around a minute, so it's like pulling off a plaster really.
