Winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the film City Slickers, Jack Palance is known to Batman fans as crime boss Carl Grissom, whose right hand man, Jack Napier (a nod to Alan Napier) goes on to become The Joker in Tim Burton's 1989 film adaptation. A star of western classics like Shane (for which he received an Oscar nomination), Palance got his start as Marlon Brando's understudy on A Streetcar Named Desire - and would go on to replace him in the production. Known for his grittiness, in his later years he appeared on the Academy Awards broadcast performing one-handed push-ups, a feat he did two years in a row, when he was 73 and 74 years old, respectively. Also known for films like Tango And Cash, Young Guns, and Once A Thief, Palance was a Hollywood legend by the time of his death in in 2006 at the age of 87. He died of natural causes, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring him.
