To the Batman world, he was The Penguin, but in the film world, he was considered one of the most accomplished actors of the 20th century. Burgess Meredith began acting on stage in the late 1920s, and by the time of his death at age 89 had been active for parts of six decades. After his time on stage, he broke through in cinema with roles in Of Mice and Men, and The Story of G.I. Joe. Films such as Second Chorus and Madame X would follow, but Burgess would find himself swept up in the Red Scare as the government drove citizens into a frenzy over fears of Communism. Soon, he was on a Hollywood blacklist, and absent from the screen for several years. Back in work, Meredith would appear in the likes of Batman, The Day Of The Locust, and the Rocky movies - with The Day Of The Locust and the first Rocky movie earning him Oscar nominations. He would even play Jack Lemon's father in the Grumpy Old Men movies of the mid-90s. Meredith died of Alzheimers complications in 1997, with Adam West speaking at his memorial service.
