The original TV Alfred, Alan Napier took the role after his agent told him it could be worth $100,000 (at the time, quite the princely sum for a supporting role). Napier, who was friends with another Alfred actor, Michael Gough, had actually had a long and storied career prior to appearing on the show, including appearances in Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo, Criss Cross, The Uninvited, and Orson Welle's Macbeth. He passed away in 1988 at the age of 85, having suffered a stroke the previous year. He was just months beyond a Batman cast reunion on FOX's Late Show. 2016 will see the release of Napier's three-volume autobiography, which he penned back in the 70s, but was never released, because as he put it, "I haven't committed a major crime and I'm not known to have slept with any famous actresses."
