11 Biggest Crowd Pleasing Film Moments Of 2012
6. Seths Dismemberment Looper
Rian Johnson has been a moderately successful filmmaker with a loyal and dedicated fanbase supporting his every move. Right from the start with his first film, Brick, Johnson showed a certain economy with subjects of a darker nature. Coupled with his very pulp noir sensibilities, Johnson was practically a shoo-in for his directing gig with Breaking Bad, as well as free to mix his noirish talents with a fair dose of humor in his sophomore effort, The Brothers Bloom. However, when it came to Looper, Johnson breached a genre one would have never expected to be keen on...Science Fiction. It was an experiment that would so fruitful, it would deliver him his biggest hit to date. The moment that best sold the point of the film was actually something that happened with one of the side characters in the film, that of Seth, Joe's best friend and fellow Looper. After failing to close his loop, Old Seth runs through the city, trying to make his way out of town before anyone find him. It's during this escape that he receives a message on his arm...a message carved into the flesh of his younger incarnation. (Whatever happened to the days where you used a Polaroid to measure the timeline?) Throughout the process of trying to make the destination carved on his own body, he keeps losing parts. By time he gets to where he's going, most of his nose, his legs, and a couple fingers are gone, leaving him as a writhing mess. A writhing mess who's then executed in front of his surgically disabled younger self. This moment basically sells the cause and effect aspect of the time travel plotline, but does so in a thrilling way that sets up later usage of the same mechanics. It's also one of the most gruesome, yet goreless scenes you'll ever see out of an action movie, especially considering the fact that Johnson is not so shy with the blood at other points in the same picture.
