Sometimes, directors make difficult choices to cut scenes because they compromise the overall make-up of their movie: they can be too long, or devastating to narrative build, or they can just not make a great deal of sense. Usually, when they're excised, the only time you'll hear about them as a film fan is when they land as extra features on the blu-ray release.

But that's not the case in The Goonies. Thanks to the completely justified decision to cut one of the worst rubber octopuses in the history of cinema, a planned set piece in which the Goonies are attacked in the water ended up on the cutting room floor (unless you watch the TV version).

Unfortunately, whoever cut it didn't think about the scene later in the film when Data is interviewed and mentions that "the octopus was scary". The poor kid comes off as completely delusional.
