11 Classic 80s Movies With Awesome Animated TV Shows You Forgot Existed
3. Beetlejuice
Beetlejuice: The Animated Series stayed faithful to the original film’s weird and wacky tone. Much of that was down to Tim Burton who returned as executive producer, while Daniel Elfman also came back to provide the soundtrack.
That all helped to give the series an authentic feel, even if there were some significant changes. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’ characters, the deceased couple and main protagonists Adam and Barbara Maitland, were nowhere to be seen, while none of the original cast returned in voice roles.
Beetlejuice, meanwhile, was far removed from the crude pervert of the film, teaming up with Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder’s character in the film) in a series of adventures split between the ghostly Neitherworld of the movie, sand worms, shrunken heads and all, along with the Deetz’s family home in New England.
Episodes primarily revolved around the shapeshifting antics of Beetlejuice, pulling pranks and cooking elaborate schemes that usually ended in comedy and calamity for all involved.
Beetlejuice: The Animated Series was not your average run-of-the-mill cartoon spin-off though. Alongside the amusing sight gags and inventive wordplay, episodes centred around clever parodies of famous films, books and TV shows and there were even a few attempts at satire. It proved popular, with the show spawning four seasons, 94 episodes and a glut of tie-ins that included several video games.
