6. Sanctum - Buddy System Drowning

Spectre Day Of The Dead
Universal Pictures

Sanctum follows a group of Australian divers after a storm traps them in an underwater cave system. Before the film gets to that storm, however, Sanctum spends half-an-hour tediously fleshing out characters who we never meet again. The rest of the film fails to excite much either, with some incredibly wooden acting and underwhelming emotional payoffs.

Sanctum would have benefited from doing away with the family drama, sticking to its genre as a cautionary disaster tale about cave diving. The deadly traps of a cold, uncaring cavern system are the most exciting elements of Sanctum, especially when it comes to the first character's demise.

After exploring part of the cave before the storm, Judes, an experienced diver, inadvertently cuts off her oxygen supply. With not enough time to reach the surface without getting the bends, master diver Frank shares his oxygen with her.

Unfortunately, Judes panics and tries to hog the air mask, only to drown in the process. Frank later reveals that Judes dived in an exhaustive state, possibly leading to her panic. Perhaps if Judes kept calm, Frank could have reattached the oxygen line, but she ended up succumbing to the waters.

I'll skip the underwater cave tour on my next holiday, thanks.
