This was an obvious choice. Jared Leto, singer of 30 Seconds To Mars, has proven himself to be one of the most exceptional actors around. From his early performances in Fight Club and Requiem For A Dream, right up to his Oscar-winning tour-de-force turn in Dallas Buyers Club, Leto has revealed himself to be multi-faceted and seriously gifted as an actor. His work in Dallas Buyers Club is just stunning. A trans woman with HIV, Leto's sensitive and layered performance is one of the best LGBTQ portrayals in a high-profile Hollywood film to date. Its recognition has opened the door for more complex and nuanced explorations of sexual minority experiences. His abilities have also, of course, landed him the role of The Joker in DC's cinematic universe, with his debut set to occur in 2016's Suicide Squad. By being cast as The Joker, he's been entrusted with the task of filling a void left by the incredible Heath Ledger. On the flip-side, 30 Seconds To Mars is a pretty generic alt-emo band. Sure, they claim a progressive and space rock influence, but their sound is actually fairly standard and... Well... Dull, really. Leto's vocals are nothing special, and fall under the whiney style that is fairly typical of most mid-noughties alternative emo-rock bands. Thankfully he's found his true calling as an actor. Perhaps his hyper-emotionalised musical style was an influence on his ability to bring to life such sensual and complex characters onscreen - in which case, I suppose everyone has to be thankful for his band's existence... Albeit grudgingly.
