11 Flat Out Lies We Were Told Just To Sell A Movie (And We Stupidly Believed)

9. "We€™'re Using 3D Creatively" - Joseph Kosinski On TRON: Legacy

Disney

Looking at the rise of colour in films, one of the biggest showcases of how new this technology could work was The Wizard Of Oz. With the real world in sepia and the fantasy land in vivid technicolor, it was a simple visual choice that made the whole film feel more magical. It was used to great effect again (albeit due to budget issues) in A Matter Of Life And Death where the real world was colourful and heaven black and white.

I always said that this was the real way 3D could show whether or not it was usable as a creative tool, rather than just to make things a bit pretty. Alice In Wonderland came and went with its rushed conversion, but it looked like only one year after Avatar with TRON: Legacy we'€™d get just what I was hoping for. Sure, they were doing it the wrong way round (surely the real world should be 3D and the computer world 2D) - this was a dollar eyed blockbuster after all - but that someone was using 3D creatively was a joy.

I whacked the 3D glasses on and wouldn't you know it didn't do a thing. No added depth to the film with the real world betraying the hype by having some stereoscopic accentuations. First-time director Kosinski had already learnt bending the truth is a great way to sell your product.
