11 Harry Potter Universe Fates Worse Than Death

10. Living With A Horcrux

Fans of the Potterverse seemingly cannot help themselves when it comes to creating their own theories about J. K. Rowling's beloved franchise and the author herself has taken time in the past to validate some of these fan-made suppositions.

One in particular that surely must be true surrounds the Dursleys; Harry Potter's only living relatives at the time of the novels. The Dursleys are incredibly toxic, selfish and downright unpleasant to their nephew but what if it isn't actually their nature to be this way? What if they were being influenced by some very potent dark magic?

The events of the Deathly Hallows show us very clearly that close proximity to a Horcrux can drive even the purest hearts to corruption and despair with Ron Weasley being particularly susceptible to the influence of Salazar Slytherin's locket and therein lies the answer.

Harry Potter himself is a Horcrux and, therefore, the years he spent in close quarters with the Dursley family corrupted them into the foul beings they are shown to be and having no control over your own personality, your moods or even your own concept of happiness is truly worse than death.

Rowling doesn't agree with this one, preferring to say the Dursleys were already bad people - but who's to say that the impact wasn't still brutal on them and made them actively worse?
