11 HORRIFYING Films About Cults
9. The Endless
The Endless differs from most of the films on this list, because it attempts to humanise the cult and its members, and reason why anyone would willingly join such a group.
The film focuses on two brothers, Justin and Aaron (played by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead respectively. The two also wrote, directed, and produced the film), who both left a cult they were members of as children; they enjoyed some short-lived fame when they told their sensational story to the media.
However, life outside the cult has been difficult. They work dead end jobs and struggle to form friendships and relationships. They only have each other.
After years without communication, Aaron receives a message from the Camp Arcadia cult and decides he’d like to visit, if only to satisfy his curiosity whether life there was really that bad.
Once again, life in the cult seems fine and dandy: they are self-sufficient, and members are free to pursue any creative endeavours they wish. Aaron views this as more fulfilling than life on the outside.
The horror of the film is existential, and the two brothers discover that the cult live in some sort of pocket dimension, where they are doomed to live the same day endlessly. It asks the question: is that any worse than what the brothers experienced outside the cult?
