11 Huge Screw-Ups From The 94th Oscar Film Nominations
1. King Richard Gets SIX Nominations
Nominations: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Will Smith), Best Supporting Actress (Aunjanue Ellis), Best Editing and Best Original Song.
And finally, there is nothing more awful this year than King Richard receiving a shocking six Oscar nominations, despite only deserving two of them.
King Richard is a film no-one would remember for more than a week were it not for Will Smith's performance. He's fantastic in the movie and he deserved a Best Actor nod, but the film around him? That's a totally different story.
King Richard is a safe, stale, flatly-written and painfully mediocre film that hits all the plot beats you'd expect without a hint of cinematic or storytelling panache. In fairness, it's not a terrible film or anything, but it is extremely forgettable, and there are literally tens of other 2021 movies that were better.
As for the other nods, Best Original Song was fine, but as previously mentioned the nominations for the writing and editing were unearned and although Ellis' performance was excellent, it wasn't quite top five level.
Aside from that terrible year when Green Book won Best Picture, the Academy has been rewarding more diverse and left-field picks in the last few years; therefore, to see such a boring piece of Oscar-Bait become one of the most nominated movies of the year is just kind-of depressing.
But hey, bad decisions are part of what make the Oscars so entertaining to follow.
