After Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland surprised everyone by raking in over a billion dollars at the box office back in 2010, rival studios rushed to get their own dark and gritty reboots into production, which led to movies like Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Mirror Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman, Red Riding Hood and Jack the Giant Slayer.

It soon became clear that Disney had the market well and truly cornered on this particular sub-genre, and the studio's production line of live-action remakes based on their extensive back catalogue of animated classics looks set to continue for a long time yet.

One of the adaptations that got caught in the crossfire was Sofia Coppola's The Little Mermaid, which the acclaimed filmmaker and terrible actress had been working on for well over a year, with Chloe Grace Moretz even being cast as the title character.

Coppola's movie seemed doomed from the second it became clear that Disney were remaking all of their big hitters, and it came as little surprise that their version of The Little Mermaid was announced just months after Coppola had walked away from hers. Rebecca Thomas may have been named as the Lost in Translation director's replacement, but the project ultimately fell apart in the wake of Disney's announcement.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
