The casting call that was leaked intriguingly also included mention of options for three sequel/series options, tying into the idea that Fox are very much committed to expanding their X-Universe, and that Deadpool is going to be involved.
There was always a possibility that Fox's vision would include an alternative group to the X-Men, and with Gambit confirmed for 2016, it could have been his X-Ternals, particularly since the universe is likely to be in pieces after Apocalypse. But it's far more compelling to imagine that Fox will instead bring in X-Force, lead by Cable and potentially including both Deadpool AND Gambit, which is exactly the direction rumours are pointing at.
The fan-love for that sort of project would be enough to rival the Avengers and Batman Vs Superman.
