11 Movie Casting Choices The Public Couldn't Handle
1. Emma Stone - A Quarter-Chinese, Quarter-Hawaiian Woman (Aloha)
And finally, we have perhaps the most baffling, inexplicable casting of an A-list actress in recent Hollywood history.
For Cameron Crowe's 2015 rom-com Aloha, Emma Stone was cast as Air Force pilot Captain Allison Ng, a quarter-Chinese, quarter-Hawaiian woman, which Stone very clearly is not.
This sparked a significant public outcry, that the part could've been given to a more ethnically appropriate actress, rather than cynically handing it off to a bankable white actress like Stone.
In the end, Crowe and Stone both appeared to apologise with absolute sincerity, stating that the character was intended to reflect the diverse cultural melting pot that is Hawaii, even if outward appearances suggested otherwise.
Whether you object to the casting or not, we can all agree on one thing - the movie is terrible, and this controversy is pretty much the only thing most people actually remember about it.
