11 Movie Franchises We Wish Weren’t Dead

7. The Matrix

The Dark Knight Trilogy
Warner Bros

The Matrix, arriving back in 1999, was one of those rare films (much like Star Wars) that came along and pioneered cinema.

The visual effects were game changing, and the action and choreography were mind-blowing, with the freeway chase and the attack on Zion remaining, to this day, benchmark scenes for big action. Setting an extremely high standard for the genre, the series has spawned countless copycats and parodies, but no equals. Including the sequels.

Ultimately, we like stuff that looks awesome, and you'd still struggle to find too many films that can compete. And someone really ought to try and atone for the sins of those sequels.

Could There Be A Comeback?

In light of Keanu Reeves’s action career taking off (again) with John Wicks, a return to The Matrix would seem only natural. However, original movie producer Joel Silver recently spoke out about a fourth film, stating: ‘We haven’t talked about it yet. I hope there’ll be a time when we can, but [the series] was seriously designed as three stories.”

Given that reboots and sequels are the most popular film entities currently on the market, Warner Bros. may be persuaded sooner than expected. For now though, we’ll have to make do with Reeves and Laurence Fishburne doing their thing in John Wick 2 (and possibly 3).
